Percy Watson for their support of legislation that will add funding for civil legal assistance. House Bill 579, which addressed funding at several levels of the judiciary, includes a $2.77 special assessment on some misdemeanor fines, generating money for the Civil Legal Assistance Fund. The legislation went into effect July 1.

The Hon. William L. "Bill" Waller, Jr. (born February 9, 1952) was sworn in as Chief Justice on the Supreme Court of Mississippi in January 2009. He represents the Central Judicial District of Mississippi. Waller, a native and current resident of Jackson, Mississippi, is the son of William "Bill" Waller., Sr., the former Governor of Mississippi from 1972 to 1976, and Carroll Waller, the former First Lady of Mississippi. The junior Waller graduated from Murrah High School andMississippi State University in 1974, where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He received his law degree from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1977.
