Empower PAC, a group promoting charter schools and for-profit education spent tens of thousands of dollars against incumbent legislators - and they won. Big time. Empower was able to defeat DeSoto County Republicans Forrest Hamilton, Wanda Jennings, Pat Nelson, and Gene Alday. They also went after Republican Rep. Ray Rogers of Rankin County but were unsuccessful. |

Longtime Republican Rep. Ray Rogers of Rankin County voted against charter schools in 2013, and now he is a target of Empower. Rogers's opponent, Randall Stephen, has received over $11,000 to take on this race.

Nolan Ray Rogers (born July 3, 1931) is an American politician in the state of Mississippi. Rogers, a former democrat, is a native of Pearl, Mississippi, where he attended Pearl High School. During his time there he was the first quarterback in their football program. Ray Rogers Stadium at Pearl High School is named after him. He owns an advertising company and is a former justice of the peace. Rogers was elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives in 1983 and has served district 61 since 1984. A Republican, he serves on the Ways and Means, Banking and Financial Services, Investigate State Offices, Management, Military Affairs and PEER committees.
