Senator Dr. David Parker won a special election in 2012 and represents DeSoto County in the Mississippi state Senate. He serves on several Senate committees including Economic Development, Elections, Judiciary-A, Housing and Public Health & Welfare.
David graduated from Greenbrook Elementary and Southaven High School. While excelling in sports and academics at Southaven, he achieved a position as greens-keeper at Briargate Country Club and was responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of the golf course and directly supervised five other workers. After graduating with honors, he attended Christian Brothers University where he paid for his education by working at Federal Express for four years, promoted quickly to team leader with oversight of 30 workers on a nightly basis. He next attended the Southern College of Optometry where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Doctor of Optometry Degree.
In 1995, David founded Olive Branch Eyecare, opening his practice with one employee. He methodically grew the business through excellent service and prudent office management policies. David is committed to assuring his employees have access to health care and pays for all employees’ health insurance coverage. Today, David has a thriving practice with 15 full time employees. He continues to use the same principles of hard work and conservative financial management that allowed him to begin and build his practice. Parker recently opened an additional optometry office in Horn Lake to anchor a new shopping center development.
David has served as a mentor doctor for over 20 students of optometry and seeks to instill principles of leadership in these future practice and business leaders. These doctors are now in practice in over 10 states around the country and continue to rely on David for advice on innovative and successful practice management. He also contributes to professional development in eye care as an adjunct professor for the Southern College of Optometry and previously as an adjunct professor for the University of Alabama-Birmingham. David also serves as a diplomate of the American Board of Optometry and represents Mississippi at the American Optometric Association. He is past society president and legislative chairman of the Northwest Mississippi Society of Optometrists.
David, 42, and his wife Ashleigh have four children: Allie, Jack, Luke and Jude. They have both been active PTO supporters of SBC, DeSoto Central High School and Pleasant Hill Elementary, with Ashleigh serving as President of the PTO for 2 years. David has coached youth baseball, basketball, softball, volleyball and soccer.
